Call for Papers: Special Issue on Language Learning and Teaching with ChatGPT

Focus and Scope

Since ChatGPT appeared in November 2022, there has been an enormous amount of hype and concern about its impact on education. ChatGPT is a sophisticated chatbot that incorporates learning techniques which allow it to produce responses to requests for information that are not only informed by vast databases, but also enable the production of text that is often difficult to distinguish from humans. The potential impact on language teaching has also been felt by many, producing those who are willing to embrace ChatGPT and those who are more hesitant. Both of these positions can allow a more balanced view of the ways in which ChatGPT could and should be used as a part of language teaching and learning environments.

The Technology in Language Teaching & Learning journal invites submissions for a special issue on the use of ChatGPT in language learning and teaching. The special issue will focus on the potential of ChatGPT as a tool for language education, as well as the practicalities and concerns of its integration into language classrooms and curriculum.

Potential topics for submission include, but are not limited to:

• The use of ChatGPT in language instruction and assessment, including its impact on student engagement and language proficiency
• The integration of ChatGPT into language curriculum and classroom activities
• The use of ChatGPT in second language acquisition research
• The ethical and privacy considerations of using ChatGPT in language education
• The development of ChatGPT-based language learning resources and materials
• The adoption of ChatGPT in teacher development and course preparation
• Teachers’ and students' perceptions of ChatGPT for language education
